Angel Ortega & Ruth Rodriguez
Vina Izadi was in fact the Anton family’s first winery estate (even before Villacreces) as the family already owned old vineyards in the DOC. Located in Rioja Alavesa, Izadi aims to produce wines that express the character of the local varieties. They are developing their wines to be fresh with a touch of modernity -without forgetting tradition. The Anton Family founded Izadi in 1987 after years of running vineyards in Villabuena de Alaba. The Antons also own a one star Michellin Restaurant (Zaldiaran) in the hamlet of Vitoria.
Transformation of the winery happened in 1997, when Don Gonzalo Anton hired Mariano Garcia (winemaker for 30 years at Vega Secilia). Together with Angel Ortega (winemaker for Izadi), they created what we now recognize as the Izadi style: robust yet refined, modern and international. The word Izadi means Nature. The vineyards of Izadi are located deep in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, in the triangle formed by three villages, Villabuena, Ábalos and Samaniego. The triangle pictured on the label of Izadi represents these three villages.
